Going Fallow

Going Fallow

It’s the first of May and while it may not be May Day, it should be a celebration of spring; filled with flowers and the promise of a fruitful gardening year to come.
2020 is proving to be slightly different. When we should be busily buzzing around the polytunnel, potting up, pricking out and propagating for the growing season, we are instead spending far too long stuck inside staring at screens.
While it is frustrating to have to put the Gardening Project on hold, even for the best of reasons, it is encouraging to know that letting the land go “fallow” – to lie uncultivated for a season, is a healthy thing to do. It is an ancient practice (it was prescribed in the Bible – see Exodus 23v11!), allowing both the ground to recover and wild species to flourish.
From the few visits we’ve had to the Green Meadow Garden, just to check that everything is ok, it certainly looks to be growing away happily. All the same, we’re looking forward to getting back there regularly as soon as we can!
